Places to Eat

The Little Trattoria on Korte Houtstraat

A meadow scene, illustrative.

There is a 22-seat trattoria a few streets behind the Mauritshuis where the menu is a single piece of A4, printed that afternoon, and nothing on it is wrong. I have eaten there four times now. Three of those times the same older couple was in the corner sharing one plate of pasta.

What to know

  • No reservations after 19:30. Arrive at 18:45 and you’ll get a table; arrive at 20:00 and you’ll be standing on the canal.
  • The wine list is on a chalkboard. Ask for the house red — it changes every Wednesday and it has never let me down.
  • Order the white-bean crostini. Then the orecchiette. Then split a tiramisu and pretend you didn’t.

It is the kind of place where the chef will come out, see you having a good time, and bring you something extra on a small plate, and then refuse to tell you what it was.
